| 概要 | Medieval artists used clothing as a code to communicate to viewers an individual's identity, occupation, and character; for viewers today, the specifics of garments can locate artworks chronologically...and geographically. The material for this volume was assembled over three decades by art historian Anne H. van Buren (1927-2008), who died before publication. She had assembled a dress database of nearly 1,000 objects--an invaluable resource for attribution and dating--and yet it was largely inaccessible to scholars before this publication. This volume presents the database itself as well as a pictorial album of roughly 300 images that she selected, with her commentary. Also included are a comprehensive, annotated glossary of medieval clothing terms and a detailed list of dated artworks that portray how people actually dressed. The volume is oversize (9x12.5").
