Reporting from a long-term search for a funda...ental conceptual understanding of mirror symmetry, he starts with the tropical semi-ring, develops tropical geometry, explains Mikhalki's tropical curve-counting formulas, and outlines the proof given by Nishinou and Siebert. Then he explains his own recent work connecting all this to the mirror side, and sketches ideas he and Bernd Siebert are working on to construct degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds from affine manifolds with singularities.
