| 概要 | Every culture has its rituals. Most people know that rituals of greeting and social interaction vary according to the situation. But many also assume that these ritual greetings are basically the same...everywhere. In this collection, Senft (Max-Planck-Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen) and Basso (anthropology, University of Arizona, emerita) present articles that explore the variety of everyday ritual communication in societies in Africa, Australia, South America and Southeast Asia. The various rituals are interesting, but the focus is on how they function to define the culture and how they can alter to incorporate new ideas and situations. The use of these rituals both to maintain historic unity and to adapt to contemporary situations shows the ways in which cultures can retain identity in the face of invasion by other groups.
