| 概要 | Editor Stevens (anthropology, SUNY at Buffalo) provides a lengthy (60-plus pages) introductory essay and discussion of the plan of this reference, relating the history of anthropology's involvement wi...h the study of religion, emphasizing potential contributions of the discipline, and urging anthropologists to step further into this arena. Following are reprints of 79 articles and excerpts that made the cut for inclusion in this four-volume work--their selection the result of an arduous winnowing process. In fact, Stevens includes short accounts of 13 pieces from the next-to-final list as a way of informing readers who might want to seek them out. The criteria for inclusion did not demand that the author be an anthropologist but rather that the work pertains to the discipline. An interesting chronological table in the front matter lists the selections by date, beginning with an 1871 excerpt on animism from a book titled Primitive Culture by Edward B. Taylor; the final item on the list is a 2011 version of an article written for this collection by George Gmelch called "Baseball Magic." Arrangement is in 13 sections, each with an introduction. The first contains early writings on sacrifice, sympathetic magic, the rise of religions (Max Weber), and excerpts from Freud's "Totem and Taboo" and Durkheim's "The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life." Subsequent sections group articles according to the themes of symbols, supernatural beings, magical power and forces, human agents of supernatural danger, myth, ritual, religious practitioners, women and gender, belief, ecology, neurobiological bases, and socio-cultural change.
