| 概要 | Sutherland is affiliated with the U. of Alberta where he teaches physics, earth and atmospheric sciences, and math and statistical sciences, and still finds time to develop theories and run lab experi...ents and numerical simulations to examine the generation, propagation, and breaking of internal waves. In his preface he explains the gaps in the available coverage of this topic, which is typically given partial consideration in some texts or addressed in others at a level that excludes the non-mathematically sophisticated reader. He directs this presentation of the physics and math describing internal gravity waves to students with some background in multivariable calculus, ordinary differential equations, and partial differential equations (useful, but not necessary). Background in atmosphere-ocean science and fluid dynamics is not assumed, and the subject is covered at an introductory level in the first chapter. The listing of suggestions for further reading has been carefully prepared and includes textbooks, review articles, and journal articles precisely referenced to the topics addressed in the book.
