概要 The articles in this thought-provoking study all attempt to describe and explain the ways in which post socialist cities in Eastern Europe have recreated themselves since the fall of the Soviet Union....Editors Czaplicka (Center for European Studies, Harvard)along with Gelazis and Ruble, both of the East European Studies Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center, summarize general conclusions from the individual essays, which each discuss one city. The ways in which buildings are restored or torn down, streets and even the city itself renamed, are indicators of the pasts the cities wish to remember and the futures they desire. The variations are striking. Some wish to reintegrate with Europe and their days in the Hapsburg Empire. Others connect with an ethnic heritage that had been suppressed. This will be of great interest to those who wish to understand the changes that still continue within the cities of the former Soviet bloc.
