| 概要 | For this festschrift honoring the eminent medievalist, Stephen D. White, Tuten (history, Juniata College) and Billado (history, Seton Hall University) have assembled a group of articles by scholars wh... are themselves eminent in the field. Reflecting White's many interests, the book is loosely divided into three sections. Part one, on feud and violence, contains articles on how both these activities could be avoided or contained by social customs, often by negotiation between the parties involved. Violence is also channeled through religion as essays by Barthelemy and Bynum show. The second section begins by tackling the hydra of "feudalism" a term no longer used by medievalists but still all too common in popular parlance. Brown and Cheyette give complementary views of the problem. The next three essays, by Hyams, Bartlett and Barton, focus on forms of medieval legal processes including the adaptation of Norman French to English law, the attempts to contain personal feuds and the act of raising a clamor as an effective call for justice. White's more recent work is reflected in the final essays, which address the re-evaluation of sources, including art, to shed light on little known aspects of medieval society, such as the agency of women in legal matters, the fates of political hostages, who were often children, and the uncertain definitions of treason. This splendid collection should be in every university library. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) 続きを見る |
