| 概要 | Most regard the Marian Church as one-dimensional, retrograde, sterile and violent. This collection of 12 essays begs to differ, asserting that although the return of Roman Catholicism under Mary I was...brief, its politics and social attitudes were significant as was the Catholic renaissance it engendered. After an introduction to the personal religion and humanism of Mary, essays describe the impact of the return of Catholicism in the episcopate, universities, church courts and the restoration of abbeys. Three essays examine the work of Cardinal Pole in his final legation and preaching and the influence of the Spanish. The final essays describe the Marian restoration and the Mass, the sermons of Bishop Thomas Watson, Henry Machyn's manuscript and the marking of the days, and the persecution of Protestants in Kent.
