Criteria for grouping there include three of the four major language groups of Africa, various foreign and indigenous religions, and political and military units ranging from states to local age cohorts. The 12 papers consider identification and insecurity in the Lower Omo Valley; institutions of identification and networks of alliance among Rift Valley agriculturalists; land, identification, and the state in Ethiopia; and pastoralists in the Kenya-Ethiopia borderlands. The second volume focuses on Sudan, Uganda, and the Ethiopia-Sudan borderlands. Notions of groups and group dynamics that have been developed in social anthropology are applied to people in the region as a means of investigating conflict at large and small scales. Among the topics are grassroots peace initiatives between the Nuer and Dinka of South Sudan, endogamy and alliance in northern Sudan, the rise and decline of lorry driving in the Fallata migrant community of Maiurno on the Blue Nile, conflict and identity politics in Anywaa-Nuer relations in Gambela in western Ethiopia, and changing identifications among the Pari refugees in Kakuma.
