| 概要 | Having studied the organization of Russian imperial society for two decades, Wirtschafter (history, California State Polytechnic U., Pomona) realized she did not know how the empire's subjects underst...od its social relations. Archival documents were little if any help, so she turned to plays of the 18th century. Though she found the usual cliches and stock plots and characters, and acknowledges that the plays were mediated through public constraints and institutions, she found important clues to how educated Russians conceptualized their society.
