He includes overarching theoretical discussions of grand strategy; historical discussions of US grand strategy from World War II to the present; and policy-oriented discussion concerning US grand strategy in regards to Europe and NATO and in regards to the rise of China. As Art describes it, three overarching themes run through the essays: the central role of domestic and international politics in driving strategy, the necessity of military power to the success of a great power's foreign policy, and the continuity of US interests and the US need to deploy its military power to protect these interests.
