In this handbook of forensics, editors Blau, of the Vi...torian Institute of Forensic Medicine in Melbourne and Ubelaker who, among other things, is primary consultant in forensic anthropology for the FBI, have collected articles that cover every aspect of the field, from histories of the discipline in several countries, through advice on ethics and court appearances. One section discusses technical aspects of skeletal remains, such as distinguishing the marks left by the teeth of rats or telling ante from post-mortem injuries. Case studies describe the work of forensic anthropologists and archaeologists after natural and man-made disasters such as the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia and the identification of the victims of "ethnic cleansing" in Bosnia and the Solomon Islands. All of the articles are authoritative and cited but also couched in terms that non-specialists can understand. The human reaction of the authors to the remains of atrocities they must face makes their dispassionate reporting of their work all the more powerful.
