| 概要 | Bennett (U. of North Carolina at Asheville) notes that the study of optics, if conducted prior to upper-level quantum mechanics, provides context and foundation for the study of quantum mechanical wav...s in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics curriculum. With this in mind he gives students of all these disciplines plenty of examples and applications, along with strong development of theoretical concepts. He begins with a description of the physics of waves, up to the three-dimensional wave equation, then moves to electromagnetic waves and photons (with an appendix on Maxwell's equations in differential form), reflection and refraction, including the Fresnel equations, geometric optics (with supplemental material on radiometry and other topics) superimposition and interference, diffraction, lasers, optical imaging, polarization and nonlinear optics. Although designed for single-semester classroom use, the exercises lend themselves to self-study as well. The illustrations are clear and helpful, and Bennett includes a list of further reading.
