概要 | When Martin (history, University of Adelaide, AU, emeritus) began his research on the effects of alcohol on violent behavior in traditional Europe, he thought that he would find a clear correlation be...ween the two. However, he discovered that the issue was more convoluted than he had thought. Comparing drinking habits from legal, religious and literary records for England, France and Italy, he found that cultural attitudes on violence and alcohol were more important than those imposed by authorities. He divides the question by the places one drank--home, festivals, taverns and alehouses--what was drunk and if the country tended to use alcohol regularly with meals or only on special occasions. He found that even the definition of drunkenness in the pre-breathalyzer era was not set, nor was the definition of disorderly. This study is a fascinating overview of a segment of society that seems universal but, on closer examination, turns out to demonstrate the subtle differences between the worldviews of the past and our own.
