No Growth without Equity? Inequality, Interests, and Competition in Mexico presents a novel analysis showing why more equality is necessary to increase economic growth. The mystery is why Mexico's development performance has been disappointing with respect to growth and equity despite an array of economic reforms and the transition to democracy. Economists from the World Bank and other banks, as well as a few in academia, enter the debate, which has been hotly contested both within and beyond Mexico. They cover concepts and the international experience; interactions between equity, institutions, and growth in Mexico; equity and core institutions in Mexico: social security, the labor market, and banking; and how unequal structures hurt competition. Among specific topics are the political economy of equity and development, the inequality trap and its links to low growth in Mexico, why banks do not lend, the governance of Mexico's oil.
