| 概要 | This is the softcover reprint of the English translation of 1974 (available from Springer since 1989) of the first 3 chapters of Bourbaki's 'AlgA]bre'. It gives a thorough exposition of the fundament...ls of general, linear and multilinear algebra. The first chapter introduces the basic objects: groups, actions, rings, fields. The second chapter studies the properties of modules and linear maps, especially with respect to the tensor product and duality constructions. The third chapter investigates algebras, in particular tensor algebras. Determinants, norms, traces and derivations are also studied. This softcover reprint of the 1974 English translation of the first three chapters of Bourbaki 's Algebre gives a thorough exposition of the fundamentals of general, linear, and multilinear algebra. The first chapter introduces the basic objects, such as groups and rings. The second chapter studies the properties of modules and linear maps, and the third chapter discusses algebras, especially tensor algebras. This series was originally published in French in the 1970s as Elements de mathematique. It comprises ten works (some subjects occupy more than one volume), five of which are cited in this issue of SciTech (see entries at QA251, QA387, QA611). The series takes up mathematics at the beginning, and gives complete proofs. It is directed to those who have a good knowledge of at least the content of the first year or two of a university math course. The method of exposition is axiomatic and abstract, proceeding from the general to the particular, a choice dictated by the main purpose of the treatise, which is to provide a solid foundation for the whole body of modern math. The first six books are numbered, and, in general, every statement assumes as known only those results which have been discussed in preceding volumes. This volume is composed of three of ten chapters on algebra, covering specifically: algebraic structures; linear algebra; and tensor, exterior, and symmetric algebras. Much material was added or revised for this edition, which thoroughly establishes the theories of commutative fields and modules over a principal ideal domain. Serious students of mathematics need not to be told that the publication of (the fictitious) N. Bourbaki's Elements of mathematics constitutes a major watershed in the modern history of mathematics. And many have reason to be immensely grateful to those involved in the on-going effort to produce a careful English translation of that multi-volume work. The present volume contains translations of Chapters 4-7 (Polynomials and rational fractions, Commutative fields, Ordered groups and fields, Modules over principal ideal domains) of the Bourbaki volume devoted to algebra.
