| 概要 | The Fifth World Archaeology Congress, held in 2003, was the first to incorporate a theme dealing with underwater and maritime archaeology, which can involve the study of the remains of watercraft and ...ircraft, cultural material lost or left at sea, structures built wholly or partly underwater, or the remains of human activity that subsequently has been inundated. In this volume, Leshikar-Denton (Cayman Islands National Museum) and Erreguerena (National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico) present the papers from the session on Underwater and Maritime Archaeology in Latin America and the Caribbean. The volume's 19 papers discuss such topics as the submerged cultural heritage of Mexico, nautical charts and measurement systems of the 17th century, human behaviors in the interpretation of a 16th century wreck, evidence of early inhabitants in submerged caves in the Mexican Yucatan, Mayan mortuary deposits in submerged caves of Yucatan, the role of benthic communities and environmental agents in the formation of underwater archaeological sites, Bermuda's shipwreck heritage, public archaeology and the protection of underwater cultural heritage in Jamaica, preservation of waterlogged archaeological glass using polymers, and the development of maritime archaeological tourism using the wreck of the English SS Mediator in Cura,cao.
