William, Scotland in August and September 2005, this volume, like the conference, is the second devoted to the various hyp...theses and models of planetary plumes. The 45 papers are grouped by topic, with sections on plates and plumes, mantle convection and seismology, heat and temperature, oceanic and continental melting anomalies, planetary evolution, and education. Written by an international community of geologists, the hefty volume represents the state of research in a rapidly developing and still controversial area of study. Each article includes a detailed abstract and a full list of references and is illustrated with color and b&w drawings, photos, and tables. Insiders will delight in the two concluding articles, by Peter R. Vogt and John C. Holden, spoofing the controversies with drawings of the theories and scientists.
