概要 The Swahili people are losing the last vestiges of their ancestral culture under the pressures of their Muslim scholars, who insist on the purification of local Islamic customs, and the influences of ...cience and technology, socialism and capitalism, secularism, and historical materialism, according to the author. Knappert, a specialist in the languages and literatures of Africa, was formerly affiliated with the U. of Louvain, Belgium. He explains that the culture occurs along the coast of East Asia between Marika (Merca) in the north and Mozambique in the south, and on nearby islands. In the first of two volumes, he considers aspects of the culture such as the geography and history of East Africa, the peoples, agriculture, society structure, and marriage and family law. The text is double spaced. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Topics in this second volume of two include the history of language in Africa, Swahili literature and scripts, dance and song, musical instruments, disease and Swahili remedies, religion and healing, the calendar and celebrations, and cosmology. The two volumes are paged together; there is no index. The text is double spaced. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
