He offers instead a conceptual frameworks based on the turbulence of real economies, which includes new technologies and innovations, new markets, new networks, and substitution effects in modular systems. He notes that capitalism is not stationary, nor can it ever be, that entrepreneurial-level profits can only be got outside of equilibrium, and that no firm operates by itself. While explaining the Penrosean approach and keeping the goal of a "unified theory" of management in mind, Mathews demonstrates how strategy must be linked to constantly shifting industrial and evolutionary dynamics.
