概要 The 14 papers presented here by Harrington (U. of Washington) and Daniels (U. of Birmingham, UK) had their origins in the annual residential conference of the International Geographical Union's Commis...ion on the Dynamics of Economic Spaces, held in August of 2004 and titled "Service Worlds: Employment, Organizations, Technologies." The theoretical papers are theoretically founded on the following premises: that the acquisition and organization of knowledge are central to the operation and marketing of many service-providing activities; that these requirements motivate the structure of organizations, relationships to other organizations, location of operations, and entry into new markets; and that because knowledge requirements vary by service sector and opportunities for organizational structures and relationships vary by local context, sector- and location-specific studies are necessary to explore the nature of these contingent relationships. In addition to touching upon overarching theoretical issues of the connections between knowledge and service industries, the papers examine processes and implications of the internationalization of services and discuss variation in regions and service sectors in terms of wider innovations that can be traced back to business service companies.
