概要	The authors (both of the Hoover Institution) intend this work as a short introduction to the history and politics of the China-Taiwan issue. They describe the origins of the issue in the coming to pow...r of the Communist Party in Mainland China while the nationalist forces of the Kuomintang retained control of the offshore island of Taiwan. A narrative is provided of the detente of the 1990s, in which it appeared that China might be reunited peacefully and the political break that happened in 2000, when Taiwanese elections brought to power a Taiwanese independence party. They argue that further moves towards Taiwanese separatism raises the threat of war and promote unification as a preferable alternative.
