| 概要 | In this overview of the sociological and anthropological literature on theorizations of the body, Cregan (a postdoctoral research fellow in the Globalism Institute, RMIT U., Australia) structures the ...aterial around the themes of the body as object, as abject, and as subject. The body as object relates to shaping and conforming the body to external rules and regimes. The first section thus deals with the socially regulated body, theorizations of social control through behavioral norms and institutional religious, legal, and political mechanisms. As object, it "is a body that is socially ambivalent--sanctified and reviled--and that exceeds bodily boundaries and borders." The theories discussed in the corresponding section are concerned with the imbalance between mind and body in social theory from the perspective of beliefs, ritual practices, and the minds ability to shape perceptions of embodiment. The body as subject concerns the individual and individual experience as they are situated in the wider social complex. The final chapters, then, range across such topics as interpretation of the body through the lens of biotechnology, the separation of sex and gender and their relation to theorization of difference in embodiment, and the social construction of disability and beauty.
