概要 Studies of nuclear spin relaxation in solution, according to Kowalewski (physical chemistry, Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm U., Sweden) and Maler (biochemistry and biophysics, Stockholm U.), are used...to investigate how the transfer of energy and order occur among nuclear spins and between the spin system and its environment. While some treatment of nuclear spin relaxation is found in most texts on nuclear magnetic resonance in varying depth and detail, this work aims to go into more detail on relaxation theory, experimental techniques, and illustrative applications than has heretofore been found in a single volume. After describing the theory for an audience familiar with the basics of NMR, the authors cover experimental methods for studying sophisticated phenomena of single- spin relaxation, cross-relaxation, and more general multispin phenonema, in each case moving from simple methods for simple molecules to advanced tools for studies of biological macromolecules. They then discuss applications of relaxation studies as a source of information on molecular dynamics and molecular structure. They conclude the volume with discussion of special topics, including the effects of chemical exchange on relaxation phenomena and measurements, relaxation processes in systems containing quadrupolar nuclei, paramagnetic systems containing unpaired electron spin, and NMR relaxation in other aggregation states.
