| 概要 | Although editor Pretty (environment and society, U. of Essex, UK) does not explicitly lay out the purpose of these four volumes in his introduction, perusal of the 80 papers presented makes apparent t...at he is hoping to introduce both the range and the scope of recent (mainly within the past ten years) study of the relationship between human society and the environment. His approach is inclusive in terms of disciplines and schools of thought, incorporating writings from ecological feminists, socialists, third world critics of western environmentalism, environmental economists, and liberal critics of corporate power, among others. The first volume is mostly epistemological in nature, discussing broad conceptualizations of nature and the environment, different ethical takes on questions of ecology, language and "ecoliteracy," and perspectives on the question of place. The next volume turns to issues of environmental management and contains articles on conservation, agricultural systems, materials and energy, and design and environmental change. Focus then shifts to economics in papers exploring the conceptual valuation of nature, methods and measurement, environmental externalities of human economic activities, and economic policies and management of the environment. The final volume is more political in nature, addressing institutions, processes, and policies in contributions that look at how structures of economies and the state shape the environmental, different paradigms of the commons and their implications, possible agricultural sustainability policies in developing and industrial societies, and the role of political decision-making in environmental outcomes.
