| 概要 | Evett (emeritus, English, Cleveland State U.) considers the portrayal of servants in the plays of William Shakespeare. Representations of selected major and peripheral characters are analyzed within t...e larger context of social practices and ideologies of service as they evolved through the 16th and early 17th centuries. Evett invokes both idealist and Marxist-materialist treatments of the subject of service as he examines such aspects as retainer violence, the subversive remarks of underlings, and the paradox of willing servitude.
