| 概要 | This impressive reference contains 142 full-color maps reproduced onto two-page plates as the centerpiece of as many chapters devoted to an in-depth discussion of each map's content by a specialist in...the field. Relying on the data of published primary sources and the authors' own expertise, the maps present more than 58,000 data points, or language-feature pairs, concerning the distribution of more than 200 languages. 2559 separate languages are represented on the maps. The chapters are grouped into the major topics of phonology, morphology, nominal categories, nominal syntax, verbal categories, word order, simple clauses, complex sentences, lexicon, sign languages, and miscellaneous. A bibliography, language name index, and the index of the book's codes are included. The CD-ROM contains an interactive version of the text that allows users to customize the maps by adding additional material such as geographical features, manipulating the values, creating compound features, and searching the maps and text. Impressive in size as well as scope, the book measures 10x14". Three of the four editors are with the Max Planck Insitute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
