| 概要 | Beginning their selection with an anonymous review of Jeremy Bentham's An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, Crimmins (Huron U. College) and Spencer (Brock U.) present a collect...on of 56 writings by the utilitarian political and moral philosophers and their critics. The writings were chosen by the editors as a representative sample of the debate over utilitarianism and to serve as a starting point for further research. Dating from 1789 to 1911, the writings span the period in which utilitarian theory became one of the prominent strands of British moral philosophy and political economy and assumed a leading role in jurisprudence. In addition to the review of Bentham mentioned above, the four volumes include Thomas Ewell's "Essay on the Laws of Pleasure and Pain," more reviews of Bentham, Richard Hildreth's Theory of Morals: An Inquiry Concerning the Law of Moral Distinctions and the Variations and Contradictions of Ethical Codes and reviews, reviews of John Stuart Mill's Principles of Political Economy, an extract of John C. Hurd's Topics of Jurisprudence connected with Conditions of Freedom and Bondage, a number of essays by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Woodrow Wilson's "The Study of Politics" and "Political Sovereignty," and John Dewey's "Austin's Theory of Sovereignty." Wherever possible facsimiles of original texts have been used and the antiquarian spelling has been retained in reset texts, although typefaces have been modernized and obvious typographical errors have been corrected.
