John Taylor's greatest gift was as a communicator. Through his speaking and his writing, he reached out to men and women within and particularly outside the churches, inspiring them with confidence in...a God of love who is for all people and for all time. His dedication was to this God who loves and holds us through the darkness and brings us into the light beyond. His commitment was to share the good news of the Kingdom -- the here and now of God's working in the world -- with all who would listen. Like its immediate predecessor, The Incarnate God draws on previously unpublished sermons, but also includes some of the Rosewindow articles which John, as Bishop, contributed to the diocesan newsletter. The thread which binds them is the action of God in our world by his son, Jesus, from his birth at Bethlehem, through his earthly ministry, his crucifixion and his resurrection, to the new era which these events brought about. Perhaps John Taylor's real strength as a theologian was in his engagement with social realities, in seeing God in and through the 'little people', the poor, those trying to do a good job against all odds in a harsh world. It was for them that God became incarnate, and lived and died and lives again among them. He was fully aware, too, of the cost to those who would see things as he did. 'We claim not only that Jesus makes us see things in a new light, but that he sets us free to do things in a new way. It is easy enough to recite that in the religious environment of our Jerusalem, but it is in the Galilee of politics, commerce and international affairs that we actually put his resurrection to the test.'
