| 概要 | Appropriate to high school and undergraduate students, this carefully executed reference presents over 500 full essays on a wealth of topics and authors throughout the long era of writing in England. ...he terms "British" and "literature" of the title have been interpreted so that authors, songwriters (the Beatles), playwrights, and poets throughout the British Isles are included--Robert Burns, Seamus Heaney, James Joyce, and Jonathan Swift among them--when their writings have provided exceptional influence on writing in England. Biographical entries predominate; each provides some information on the author's life, while the main focus is on career, reception, and oeuvre. Each biographical entry concludes with a list of selected works and an annotated list of further reading. A sampling of the non-biographical topics includes the author, censorship, circulating libraries, dictionaries, the elegy, genre, parody, patronage, satire, and World War I poetry.
