概要	Harreld (history, Brigham Young U.) examines the effect of German enterprise in 15th- and 16th-century Antwerp--a city that accommodated many nationalities and ways of doing business. He first describ...s the German business community in Antwerp, and how it interrelated and dealt with non-German businesses. He then describes how businesses that remained in Germany used the relationships in Antwerp to build trade that extended through Southern Germany. As Harreld does so he traces the networks of exchange, the role of sea and land routes, and imports and exports of pepper, ginger, cloth, and other commodities and luxury items. He finally shows how German merchants in Antwerp or at home influenced and were influenced by the eventual decline in Antwerp's position in the world of trade.
