| 概要 | Many discussions of democratization take for granted the necessity of a strong civil society and a significant amount of social capital. Encarnacion (political science, Bard College) disagrees with th...t idea and uses studies of Argentina and Spain to debunk the notion. He instead stresses the need for a stable and well-functioning set of formal political institutions. He argues that the misconceptions about civil society rest on the incorrect idea that social capital arises solely from civil society, rather than from the performance of constitutional institutions.
