This expanded third edition will provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of tropical plantation forestry as part of sustainable land use. Professional foresters, development specialists, and all with an interest in tropical forest management will find this a valuable reference text. The first edition was published 22 years ago, and the second, a dozen years ago; this third edition maintains the structure but is thoroughly updated throughout. The two authors are forestry experts affiliated with research and development agencies, and they are writing for students and forest managers in developing nations. After introductory material defining and discussing plantation, or "planted forest," species, development, and organization and structure, several chapters address land, social, and economic factors. The bulk of the book concerns what to plant, seed collection and storage, maintenance, nutrition, thinning, pruning, and other practical issues. The final section is concerned with soil conservation, rehabilitation, and sustainability. The bibliography is extensive, and indexing is by species and by general topic.
