| 概要 | This text describes metric and topological spaces in the context of the study of continuity and convergence. Metric spaces are used as a way to transition from real analysis to topological spaces, and...abstract topics are related back to more familiar topics. Because the book is not intended to be comprehensive, algebraic and geometric topology are not covered. Students should have already completed a previous course on analysis of real-valued functions of one variable. After a review of real numbers, sequences, and continuity for real-valued functions of one variable, the book covers continuity in metric and topological spaces, subspaces and product spaces, and the Hausdorff condition, as well as connected and compact spaces, sequential compactness, quotient spaces and surfaces, uniform convergence, and complete metric spaces. Proofs, examples, chapter reviews, and numerous exercises are included. Parts of the first edition have been moved to a companion web site, to make room for new material in this second edition on standard surfaces. Sutherland is affiliated with New College, Oxford.
