| 概要 | Morse found that the number of critical points of a smooth function on a manifold is closely related to the topology of the manifold, a discovery which became a starting point for the Morse theory, on... of the basic elements of differential topology. Some 60 years later Novikov, who was working on a problem in hydrodynamics, formulated a circle-based Morse theory. At present work on the Morse-Novikov theory is very active, with applications and connections to many geometry problems.
