The new scope includes comprehensive coverage of Islam in the twentieth century and of Muslim minorities all over the world. In 2007, the 3d ed. of the Encyclopedia of Islam began appearing serially, four times a year. Maintaining the exacting quality and comprehensive nature of the earlier editions, the Encyclopedia presents detailed entries by leading scholars worldwide on all aspects of Islam, both historical and current, including minorities in non-Islamic countries. Each volume concludes with an alphabetic subject index for all volumes published so far, listing the entry's author for each topic. In this volume, the first for 2009, the entries include a long essay on astronomy, by F. Jamil Ragep; the art and architecture of the Arabian peninsula, by Barbara Finster; and bequests, by Agostino Cilardo. Many entries are on historical figures noted for their political, religious, or cultural accomplishments. Entries are also included for significant regions, cities, and sites. Each entry concludes with a lengthy bibliography. The volume is well-illustrated with b&w plates of excellent quality. Maintaining the exacting quality and comprehensive nature of the earlier editions, the Encyclopedia presents detailed entries by leading scholars worldwide on all aspects of Islam, both historical and current, including minorities in non-Islamic countries. Each volume concludes with an alphabetic subject index for all volumes published so far, listing the entry's author as well as the topic. In this volume, the second for 2009, the entries include a long essay on bookbinding, by Marie-Genevieve Guesdon; the status of the artist, by Walter Denny; arithmetic, by Sonja Brentjes; and agnosticism, by Frank Griffel. Many entries are on historical figures noted for their political, religious, or cultural accomplishments. Entries are also included for significant regions, cities, and sites. Each entry concludes with a lengthy bibliography. The volume is well-illustrated with b&w plates of excellent quality. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Coordinated by Leiden University (The Netherlands), under the auspices of the International Union of Academies, EI1 was published in four volumes (plus supplement) between 1913 and 1938, offering alphabetically-arranged signed entries covering Islam and Islamic civilization. Written by western scholars for western scholars, EI1 was at the time considered authoritative and definitive; but of course the contents, though scholarly, were skewed, given the authorship and the readership. EI2, begun in 1954 (completed in 2005), incorporated Muslim authors and expanded content. Work began on EI3 in 2007, and this is the first volume of several to be issued this year and in coming years, until completion. The scope of EI3 has been significantly expanded to encompass all areas of the world where Islam is a majority or minority religion, and to more fully cover social context and humanistic perspectives. Volume 1 is a slim paperbound book containing entries beginning with "A" through "C," up to Centhini, Serat (a Javanese text). Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Part of a scholarly project to supplement and update the Encyclopaedia of Islam (now shortened in the supplements to EI), this is the second volume for 2011. Work began on the 3rd edition, or EI three, in 2007, and will continue to be issued every year until complete. The scope of EI three has been significantly expanded from the original encyclopedia to encompass all areas of the world where Islam is a majority or minority religion, and to more fully cover social context and humanistic perspectives. Written by specialists worldwide, the entries of this volume begin with "A" through "C," except for the last four entries: Demak (a town in Java), Expiation (its meaning in philosophy, practice, and Islamic law), Jahangir (the Mughal emperor), and Mas'ud-i Sa'd-i Salman (a Persian court poet). A lengthy entry is included on the architecture of the city of Aleppo, written by noted scholar Yasser Tabbaa, and illustrated with b&w plates of excellent quality. The encyclopedia and its supplements are essential for any library of the Islamic world. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Articles of about a page in length mostly provide biographical sketches of key figures--Muslim or not--in Islamic history and culture. Places, events, ideas, and movements are among other entries. A sampling of topics shows Damad Sehid ali Pasha (1079-1128/1667-1716), the Beyoglu district of Istanbul, Chechnya, the Dajjal, and sub-Saharan African literature. The cumulative index cites article titles back to 2007. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) The Encyclopaedia of Islam offers entries describing important persons, historical issues, geographies, dynasties, political events, and institutions of the Islamic world, with a general focus on the premodern period but some attention to contemporary issues. The Yale University Library Research Guide: Islam has called it the "most important, authoritative reference work in English on Islam and Islamic subjects." The third edition is published online, with printed "parts" appearing four times a year. This volume is the third part to appear in print for 2012, containing alphabetical entries from "A" to "H."
