概要 "Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of the authoritative Der Neue Pauly. The encyclopedic coverage and high academic standard of the work, the interdisciplinary and contemporary approach, and th... clear and accessible presentation have made the New Pauly the unrivaled modern reference work for the ancient world."
Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of Der Neue Pauly published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The ambitious, authoritative project will comprise 20 volumes (of which this is the second). It is interdisciplinary and contemporary in its approach. The first 15 volumes are devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity, with coverage of the 2,000 years ranging from the second millennium BC to early medieval Europe. Emphasis is given to the interaction between Greco-Roman culture and Semitic, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavonic cultures, and to the interaction of ancient Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Cancik (Latin, U. of Tubingen) and Schneider (ancient history, U. of Kassel) head the editorial team; Salazar (U. of Cambridge) took charge of editing the English edition, for which bibliographic references have been updated. A previous edition has been cited in Guide to Reference Books. The entries vary between a sentence or two and several pages, cite topic-specific references, and are attributed to specific authors. Occasionally maps and drawings accompany the text. The degree of detail falls between that in general references and that to be found in specific and specialized studies, so would be useful for scholars of classics and related fields looking for information just outside their specific sphere of interest. The original German Der Neue Pauly. Enzyklopadie der Antike was published by J. B. Metzlersche Verlagsbuchhandlung und Carl Ernst Poeschel Verlag GmbH, 1996ff./1999ff., Stuttgart/Weimar. Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of Der Neue Pauly published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The ambitious, authoritative project will comprise 20 volumes (of which this is the fifth). It is interdisciplinary and contemporary in its approach. The first 15 volumes are devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity, with coverage of the 2,000 years ranging from the second millennium BC to early medieval Europe. Emphasis is given to the interaction between Greco- Roman culture and Semitic, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavonic cultures, and to the interaction of ancient Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Cancik (Latin, U. of Tubingen) and Schneider (ancient history, U. of Kassel) head the editorial team; Salazar (U. of Cambridge) took charge of editing the English edition, for which bibliographic references have been updated. In addition to the many entries for proper names, a sampling of topical entries in this volume includes grain, eranos, eroticism, eschatology, farmers, fasces, flea, and Flora. Some ground plans, maps, and other illustrations are included. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of Der Neue Pauly published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The ambitious, authoritative project will comprise 20 volumes (of which this is the sixth). It is interdisciplinary and contemporary in its approach. The first 15 volumes are devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity, with coverage of the 2,000 years ranging from the second millennium BC to early medieval Europe. Emphasis is given to the interaction between Greco-Roman culture and other cultures and religions. Cancik (Latin, U. of Tubingen) and Schneider (ancient history, U. of Kassel) head the editorial team; Salazar (U. of Cambridge) edits the English edition, for which bibliographic references have been updated. A sampling of entries in this volume includes the Egyptian goddess Hathor, henna, hermeneutics, Hermes, hieroglyphic scripts, Historia Augusta, and Indo-Europeans. As an example of scope, the entry on Hispania includes sub-headings on population, languages, topography, classical knowledge and names of mountains and rivers, Roman rule, the late antique and Byzantine period, religion, systems of writing, and archaeology. Ground plans, maps, and other illustrations are included. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
The translation of the German series continues. Well known classical authors are lemmatized according to their conventional names in English, and Greek words and names generally latinized though the Greek is noted at the beginning of the entry. Most entries have bibliographies. Cross-references are provided within the text and often at the end of an entry. There are some maps and diagrams. The translation continues of Der Neue Pauly; Enzyklopadie der Antike published beginning in 1996 by J. B. etzlersche Verlagsbuchhandlung und Carl Erns Poeschel Verlag GmbH in Stuttgart and Weimar. The 20-volume English version includes updated annotations, and covers a period from the second millennium BC to the early Middle Ages. The signed articles, rarely over a page long, are thoroughly referenced and cross-referenced. The volumes are not individually indexed. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of Der Neue Pauly published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The ambitious, authoritative project will comprise 20 volumes (of which this is the thirteenth). It is interdisciplinary and contemporary in its approach. The first 15 volumes are devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity, with coverage of the 2,000 years ranging from the second millennium BC to early medieval Europe. Cancik (Latin, U. of Tubingen, Germany) and Schneider (ancient history, U. of Kassel, Germany) head the editorial team; Salazar (U. of Cambridge, the U.K.) took charge of editing the English edition, for which bibliographic references have been updated. Many of the entries are of significant artists, writers, politicians, philosophers, military leaders, and places. Other entries are on major subjects, such as sexuality, sculpture, and sports, incorporating discussion of not only the Greco-Roman world, but also in concurrent civilizations, including Egypt, the Ancient Near East, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Some ground plans, maps, and other illustrations are included. As it's an alphabetical encyclopedia, it is not indexed. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of Der Neue Pauly published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The ambitious, authoritative project will comprise 20 volumes (of which this is the fifteenth). It is interdisciplinary and contemporary in its approach. This volume concludes the part of the set that's devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity. The discussion extends beyond the Greco-Roman world to include concurrent civilizations, including Egypt and the Ancient Near East and reaching into the early Middle Ages. The entry on veterinary medicine, for example, describes remedies in Akkadian and Ugaritic before moving to Greek and Roman texts and concluding with the reception of these texts in the Middle Ages. Cancik (Latin, U. of Tubingen, Germany) and Schneider (ancient history, U. of Kassel, Germany) head the editorial team; Salazar (U. of Cambridge, the U.K.) took charge of editing the English edition, for which bibliographic references have been updated. Many of the entries are of significant artists, writers, politicians, philosophers, and military leaders. Other entries are on subjects, such as those on tumulus, vase painting, veterans, wisdom, and wood. Many drawings, ground plans, maps, and other illustrations are included. Each entry is signed and includes cross-references and bibliography. Seventy-five pages of addenda to the previous volumes appear, with entries topics that include agon, consumption of alcohol, and armament. Not indexed.
