The book originates from a conference session called Animals, Agency and Geography held at the Annual Conference of the Royal Geographical Society and Institute of British Geographers at the University of Exeter in 1997. One article from the book's 14 addresses Victorian dognapping, and the ease with which the nappers collected their ransoms. Another contribution examines 11 low-income African American women from Los Angeles and their views of animals in the city.
