概要	The Encyclopedia addresses the biology and cellular physiology of some 150 hormones and their actions in animals and plants. The editors have adopted an expanded definition of hormone, one including n...t only chemical messengers in the classical sense, but also local paracrine and autocrine signals. And so the Encyclopedia includes entries on many growth factors, interleukins, and intracellular mediators of signal transduction. The 300 articles fall within the following general areas: adrenal cortex, calcium regulating hormones, cytokines, female reproduction, gastrointestinal hormones, growth factors, insect hormones, male reproduction, membrane signal transduction, neuroendocrinology, nuclear signal transduction, pancreas, plant hormones, and thyroid. Hormones are described from several key perspectives: cellular and subcellular sites of functionality; the major systems in which the hormone is operative (reproductive, digestive, etc.); the nature of the receptor and signal transduction pathways; and for the vertebrate hormones, the important diseases of deficiency or excess, and other issues of molecular insight.
