概要	This socio-cultural study examines the reasons English law during the Tudor and Stuart periods equated unlicensed theater performances with begging. Pugliatti (Dipartimento di Filogia Moderna, Univers...ty of Florence) places the topic in a European context, drawing on primary documents in several languages (including a number of texts that recent scholarship has neglected). She discusses efforts to control beggary from Justinian's Codex to 17th-century statutes and finds anti-vagrancy and antitheatrical attitudes to be rooted in anxieties about idleness and disguise.
