概要 English mathematician James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) made significant contributions to matrix theory, invariant theory, number theory, and combinatorics and was a founder of the American Journal o... Mathematics. This four-volume set is a corrected reprint of his collected papers, originally published between 1904 and 1912. The papers are presented in chronological order. Among the important papers and topics contained in the set are his Essay on Canonical Forms, investigations in the theory of invariants, recognition of the invariant factors of matrix, lectures on the partition of numbers, the Presidential Address to the Mathematical and Physical Section of the British Association a Exeter, the Nugae Mathematicae, Sylvester's enumerative method of obtaining the complete system of concomitants of a system of quantics, his constructive theory of partitions, binary matrices, and lectures on the theory of reciprocants. Altogether, 342 of Sylvester's papers are presented. The corrections that have been made are mainly limited to obvious errors of algebraic formulas and cross-references are included in square brackets, but otherwise the papers are reprinted unaltered.
