He proposes a theory of hybridization which rejects the "clash of civilizations" view of enduring difference as well as the "McDonaldization" view of inevitable cultural convergence through capitalist consumerism. In contrast, he sees globalization as both structural hybridization involving new, mixed forms of social cooperation and cultural hybridization consisting of translocal melange cultures.
