This innovative introduction to the Scientific Revolution features more than 80 foundational documents that chronicle the emergence of organized science. From Copernicus to the chemical revolution, the writings explore such topics as the conceptual bases of science, religion, politics, and the structure of science in every corner of Europe. The documents include letters, speeches, and theoretical treatises works by Aristotle, Galen, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Bacon, Harvey, Boyle, and others. Organized to accompany Science in Europe, 1500-1800: a Primary Sources Reader, this innovative book collects key critical, analytical, and historical writings on the Scientific Revolution. Included is a broad, balanced range of voices, on such topics as the origins of modern science, the role of experiments in scientific progress, nationalism and science, patronage and censorship. The essays include key writings by such scholars as Steve Shapin, Simon Schaffer, Mario Biagioli, and Roy Porter. Selections from the writings of historians discuss the events and ideas of the Scientific Revolution which form the foundation of modern science. The focus is on the cultural topography of Europe which contributed to distinctive national roles and styles of science. Topics include, for example, the spread of Copernicanism in northern Europe, Paracelsian influence in Spain, the early St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and nationalism in 18th century German chemistry. This is a companion volume to Science in Europe, 1500-1800: A Primary Sources Reader. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)続きを見る |
