Vital Signs 2007-2008 highlights the critical environmental and social trends of the past year, taking the "pulse" of our planet. Some of the trends point to progress toward a sustainable world: In 2006, production of solar cells increased 41 percent while global wind power capacity rose 26 percent. The number of nuclear warheads held by the five acknowledged nuclear powers dropped below 27,000-the lowest level since 1961. Around the world, 82 percent of adults are now literate-up from 70 percent in 1980.
