概要 Thirty-three contributions reviewing significant developments in the field of physiology are divided into the following sections: perspectives; comparative physiology; gastrointestinal physiology; ren...l and electrolyte physiology; cardiovascular physiology; neurophysiology; respiratory physiology; endocrinology; apoptosis; and cell physiology. The price to individuals is $62.00. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Organized thematically, the papers collected here present recent advances in the discipline. Topics include cardiovascular physiology, cell physiology, comparative physiology, transgenic models, endocrinology, gastrointestinal physiology, renal and electrolyte physiology, language faculty as an organ, neurophysiology, and respiratory physiology. Additionally, the volume includes contributions from the members of the editorial board, offering retrospective looks at the progress of the discipline during the 20th century and discussing prospects for the future. An autobiographical essay by Alexander Leaf (Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School) leads off this annual compendium. Twenty-six contributions are arranged in sections on gastrointestinal physiology, endocrinology, comparative physiology, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, renal and electrolyte physiology, and neurophysiology. Six special topic articles address intermediary metabolism, and various aspects of circadian rhythms, among them molecular analysis, photoperception, and endogenous timekeepers in photosynthetic organisms. The volume is not indexed. c. Book News Inc.
As is the case with previous editions, the aim is to track recent advances in physiology. Featured in this annual are two special articles--one on G protein effector mechanisms, edited by James B. Hurley, and one on transportopathies, edited by Gerhard Giebisch. Other topics include endocrinology, comparative physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, and physiologies renal and electrolytic, gastrointestinal, and respiratory. Along with the 32 articles is a subject index, as well as cumulative indices of contributing authors and chapter titles (v.60-64). Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR.
The latest advances in the field are presented in this collection of original research papers. Chapters are in sections on cardiovascular physiology, cell physiology, comparative physiology, endocrinology, gastrointestinal physiology, neurophysiology, renal and electrolyte physiology, respiratory physiology, lipid receptor processes, and membrane protein structure. Hoffman is affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Editors Hoffman (Yale University School of Medicine) and Garbers (U. of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center) present work reflecting advances in the various fields of physiology. Of special note is a perspective chapter on principles of membrane structure, as well as two special topic sections on proton and electron transporters and advances in functional imaging in physiology. Coverage includes cardiovascular, cell comparative, endocrine, gastrointestinal, neuro-, renal, electrolyte, respiratory, and muscle physiology. Specific topics examined include estrogens in the nervous system, live optical imaging of nervous system development, and viral-based myocardial gene therapy. B&w and a few color illustrations are included. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
The 2005 edition of this annual publication features a special section on chloride channels and expands the comparative physiology section to also cover ecological and evolutionary aspects. The 32 chapters review studies on the control of thin filament function in the heart, the role of nitric oxide in blood flow regulation, the endocrinology of the stress response, and the mechanisms of bicarbonate secretion in the pancreatic duct. Other topics include secretion and absorption by colonic crypts, novel renal amino acid transporters, exocytosis of lung surfactant, calcium-activated chloride channels, and the function of chloride channels in the kidney. The 2006 entry in this annual series consists of 26 articles reviewing recent developments in cardiovascular, cell, ecological, evolutionary, comparative, gastrointestinal, renal, and respiratory physiology. A special section of four papers describes the function of mammalian transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, the properties of Drosophila light-sensitive channels, TRP channel pores, and TRP channels in C. elegans. Other topics include transcription factors and congenital heart defects, insulin resistance syndromes, brainstem circuits regulating gastric function, the role of FXYD proteins in ion transport, and stress transmission in the lung. A special section is included in this year's edition on [Beta]-arrestins with topics that include the role of [Beta]-arrestin-mediated signaling in chemotaxis cellular process, their role in regulating signaling by receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), and the role of G protein- coupled receptor kinases and arrestins. The remaining articles summarize current research in seven major areas, with individual topics including genetic defects in ciliary structure and function, timing and computation of renal ammonia transport, regulation of intestinal cholesterol absorption, and iron homeostasis. The opening paper is an account by Clay M. Armstrong of the U. of Pennsylvania of his research career working with axons. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
The 2008 edition of the annual series consists of 23 articles bringing mechanistic and molecular insights to problems concerning physiology of the whole organism. Two papers on the special topic of obesity review the role of CNS fuel-sensing mechanisms in energy balance and glucose regulation, and mechanisms of leptin action and leptin resistance. Related chapters discuss insulin signaling and its effects on glucose homeostasis and life span, and the function of satiety hormones that mediate crosstalk between the gut and brain. The respiratory physiology section highlights the role of mucins in airway function while the endocrinology section discusses the involvement of G protein-coupled receptor pathways in neuroendocrine and reproductive physiology. The volume is also calcium-centric, exploring calcium-dependent aspects of programmed cell death, cardiac contractility, and exocrine gland secretion.
