概要	Chase (U. of Leeds) traces the origins and early development of trade unionism from the amorphous groupings that shaded off into other self- help initiatives, the pubs where they met, the local commun...ties in which they were situated, and the inner life of the workplace itself. He tries to include Wales, Scotland, and Ireland in the picture as well as England, but warns that the labor histories of the four countries diverge substantially and each need their own detailed treatment. He begins with the accelerating economic and social change in the 18th century, particularly ideas concerning apprenticeship, skill, and gender and proceeds through the Chartist movement to the early 1860s.
