| 概要 | Manton (Oriental and African studies, U. of London) examines the British socialist movement's policies on children's education during the last two decades of the 19th century. He discusses the sociali...t belief in the unity of moral and material reform, which led to campaigning to improve the actual conditions of education for children. He analyzes the direct democratic control of the education system, through school boards, to bring about positive developments. He argues that the removal of this democratic control by the Conservative government through the 1902 Education Act led to the growth of state-centered and bureaucratic socialist solutions to education, and that many contemporary problems in the British educational system from these developments in the past.
