概要	Arguing that translators are agents of change, Vande Walle (Japanese studies, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium) and Kasaya (International Center of Japanese Studies, Kyoto, Japan) present 16 es...ays that explore how the western herbal tradition of Dodonaeus was diffused into Japanese intellectual circles and the effect it had on the development of modern scientific discourse. After a group of essays locate Dodonaeus' place in the European world, contributors explain the processes by which Dodonaeus was translated and examine how his work was received. A final group of essays broadens the discussion to the translation of other European scientists in Japan. The texts are accompanied by color prints. Care was put into the printing of the volume, with different colored inks used for headings and Japanese alphabet marginal notes for all transliterations from Japanese words among the outstanding features.
