| 概要 | This comprehensive survey comprises a documentation of the climatic and geological factors and an analysis of the natural plant communities of the sahelian ecosystems. Moreover, studies of the land-u...e and livestock production systems, and the primary and secondary productivity of the Sahel are presented, taking into account the various physical, biological, societal, political and economic factors influencing or constricting their development. The principles, methods and possible data interpretation for the monitoring of ecosystems are discussed, supplemented by a case study in Senegal. The reader will also benefit by a competent insight into the fundamental ecological and developmental problems of the Sahel and other African arid lands in general. A study of the natural and human environmental characteristics of the Sahel, the bioregion bordering the Sahara on the south. This region, already one of the harshest in the world, has been dramatically altered since World War II by rapid increases in human and livestock populations as well as an almost continuous 20-year drought. The result is an increasing imbalance between natural resources and their exploitation. With the aid of 114 figures, the author details the characteristics of the region, and offers general suggestions for sound management of the fragile and overburdened ecosystem.
