| 概要 | This reprint of the original edition published by E.J. Arnold and Son Limited contains the results of the only comprehensive survey of dialects ever carried out in England. Between the years 1950 and ...961, field workers from the University of Leeds roamed the country interviewing and recording elderly residents in an effort to construct a linguistic atlas of England. The first volume describes the aims and methodology of the project and provides the full text of the questionnaire used in the survey. Each subsequent volume covers a section of England and contains three parts which correspond to the nine books of the questionnaire. Together, the books contain some 1,200 questions meant to elicit terms relating to farming, animals, nature, the house and housekeeping, the human body, numbers, time and weather, social activities, and states, actions, and relation. Most of the questions are of the naming type (e.g. "What do you call this?") or the completing type (e.g. "If Jack is not single, he must be..."). The results have been transcribed using the International Phonetic Alphabet. Rumor has it that the original gramophone recordings are being transcribed onto CD-ROM.
